Reading
For many families, reading can quietly become a source of pressure. Are they reading enough? Are they reading the right books? Should I be doing more?
The good news is that developing a love of reading does not come from doing everything ‘right’ or following a perfect plan at home. It grows through connection.
Small, shared moments — reading together, talking about a story, looking at pictures, discussing characters or simply enjoying a book — can help reading feel enjoyable, personal and meaningful.
This is at the heart of reading for pleasure, and it is something that can grow naturally at home.
As a parent or guardian, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Sharing books and reading aloud to your child from an early age is one of the best ways to develop a positive attitude towards reading. Children benefit enormously from hearing stories, poems and information read aloud, even before they are able to read independently themselves.
Over time, these shared experiences can help children develop a love of stories and books and encourage them to become confident, independent readers.
Reading is about so much more than learning to decode words. It opens the door to imagination, language, knowledge, communication and learning and provides children with skills that they will use throughout their lives.
At the Ceiriog Valley Federation of Schools, we use a range of approaches and reading schemes to support children as they develop their reading skills. Below, you will find information about the reading schemes we use in school, together with some simple and helpful ideas for supporting your child at home.
Most importantly, enjoy reading together. There is no need to make every reading experience a lesson. A bedtime story, sharing a favourite book, reading a recipe, looking at a magazine or talking about something you have read together all count.
Little moments of reading, shared together, can make a big difference. 📚❤️
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc is a phonics literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. At the federation we begin to expose children in Nursery to skills that will help them access Read Write Inc. We continue teaching Read Write Inc to children beyond the age of 7, as we take into account children’s stage, rather than their age.
What is Tric a Chlic?
Tric a Chlic is a synthetic phonics programme in Welsh for children aged 3-7. The programme is built from three elements namely,
- hear and recognise the sounds,
- combine (build) sounds to read
- segment (cut) sounds to spell.
The synthetic phonics method focuses on presenting the sounds of the letters rather than presenting the alphabet in a specific order. By recognising and learning the sounds, the learners immediately begin to establish phonics building blocks, and with the right tools, use them to read simple words quickly:
- when reading a word, they recognise the letters and combine appropriate sounds,
- when writing a word they recognise the sounds and write the corresponding letters.
